Many people have reached out to me asking for advice on how to even begin the process of becoming a pilot. When you first have thoughts about beginning this career path, it seems as if there isn't enough information online to help you fully understand the process. Don't worry we've all been there.
The first step to begin this journey would be discussing how you will fund the training. Getting your licenses can be very expensive. Some options for funding would be:
1. Paying out of pocket while you work **what I did for my private pilot**
2. Using your savings
3. Asking family members to loan you money
4. Receiving a loan from a bank (depending on the school you attend)**what I have now**
5. AOPA Financing
6. Apply to scholarships online
These options will vary based on which school you plan to attend. Some schools do not accept bank loans and some do, so if you just research the schools in your areas they will tell you. I am attending ATP and they accept loans through Wells Fargo and Sallie Mae.
The second step in this journey would be researching schools in your area. It is important to be familiar with all of your options. Read about their financing options, read the reviews, and ask around to see if you can find anyone that has attended that school. I recommend visiting the schools in person as well so you can get a feel of the vibe and the staff working there.
A big third step for people who have not flown in small planes yet would be to make sure you take a discovery flight or fly with someone you know before you sign up for any program. Its important to know that you will able to tolerate flying in a small plane everyday.
The fourth step is understanding how long the process is. The private pilot license can take around 3-6 months to complete with a minimum of 40 hours. Then you move on to your instrument rating which can take 2-4 months. Then commercial single engine about 2-3 months and commercial multi-engine about 2 weeks. After these are complete you have the option of becoming a Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) (CFII) (MEI). At ATP you can have all of these completed in about 8-9 months!
The fifth step is finding an aviation medical examiner (AME) to receive your medical certificate in order to begin your training. You can find one here on the FAA website: https://www.faa.gov/pilots/amelocator/
The sixth step is to get prepared to study and have the time of your life! Becoming a pilot is a lot of work but it is such a rewarding experience and there is such an incredible community supporting one another. If you have any other questions don't hesitate to reach out!
